Halloween 2017 in the UAE

Halloween is spreading across the globe. Especially when you live in an apartment complex with lots of western expats in a country with a lot of western expats. The weekend before Halloween there was a big scavenger hunt at one of the malls here. Kautz Kids won mall gift cards there and got a bag of candy!
Our apartment complex, Al Zeina, threw a whole Halloween party at the park on actual Halloween. There were games, contests, bouncy house, food trucks.
But the Kautz kids preferred to ditch their costumes (it's still totally hot out) and climb palm trees instead.
A few weeks ahead of the big day, there was a sign up circulating on facebook, where people who would be handing out treats to the little trick-or-treaters could sign up and on the big day there was a printed sheet of the participating apartments. So the kids knew exactly where to go.
We had four kids still interested in dressing up. Eliza was "Life" (handing out lemons...and sugar), Henry was a rock star guitar hero, Greta was a pirate, and Ben was a scientist. Eliza not only had an online class that evening she needed to be online for, but also she hasn't met any kids her age here in the apartments, s o she stayed home and manned the door with the candy bucket. Kinda sad that the dress up fun is coming to an end for her. 

So only the younger three walked the apartment buildings and hit nearly every place on the list. But the haul was not nearly as huge as has been typical in our old Iowa neighborhood. And that's okay, especially now that three of them have orthodontics appliances and, according to our orthodontist, should be restricting candy intake to once a week!

    Is it bad that I eat things I shouldn't with braces more then once a week....?

      Nah dude, I ate my haul in 2 days and the orthodontist says I'm doing fine but they don't know :P

      IKR. I'm really thinking not eating popcorn and things like that is more if a "suggestion" because I eat it, go in to see my orthodontist and he said I'm doing amazing ;P

That's "welcome" in Arabic! It's pronounced "marhaba". Isn't it gorgeous? My family and I have recently been learning Arabic, and we've just started to move on to the numbers after we finished all the letters. The Abu Dhabi Adventure

        Yes! I can finally say that I have been to Abu Dhabi! This post covers all of the best day yet, so I'm going to try a different tactic this time: Yesterday was Mom's first time driving in the UAE. Based on her reaction, I think that she thinks driving is stressful, because her knuckles were pretty white for the hour it took to drive there. Oh, and guess who saw the first camel? ME!!😄 We looked around some neighborhoods we are thinking of living at, then Mom drove us to a mall for a celebratory "We didn't crash" lunch. Since she was the driver, she got to pick where we ate. We ended up at a French restaurant, where we were served  this gourmet ketchup . At the same place, Henry ordered CocaCola, and it came in this way cool glass bottle. Highlights of the past few days:

#1: The Flight from Sioux Falls to Chicago       We started off to the airport from my Grandparents' house. My Aunty drove us there so her family could buy our van. Security was hard on my nerves, but fortunately it passed without incident for us. Waiting for the plane wasn't too bad, and it didn't take too terribly long! Then we finally boarded our plane. It wasn't a big one, but I was comfortable enough. My ears adjusted to the pressurized cabin, as we lifted off the runway. I got a window seat on this time, and I spent most of the one hour and forty minutes of the flight staring out the window at the clouds, and the tiny, itty-bitty peasants beneath me. According to Ben, "I can see why google maps puts the ground into squares because that's what it actually looks like!
